Spotting Fake Checks, Prize Scams, and Overpayment Tricks

Scammers are always finding new ways to make fraud look legitimate—and fake checks and “too good to be true” payments are some of the most common. Whether it’s an unexpected prize, a job opportunity, or an overpayment that needs to be refunded, these scams are designed to move fast and create confusion. Knowing the warning signs can help you avoid costly mistakes.

1. Fake checks often look real

Fraudulent checks can appear authentic, complete with logos, watermarks, and signatures. Just because a check clears initially doesn’t mean it’s valid. Banks may make funds available before discovering the check is fake—leaving you responsible once it’s returned.

2. Be cautious of unexpected prizes or winnings

If you’re told you’ve won a prize, lottery, or sweepstakes you never entered, that’s a major red flag. Scammers often ask you to deposit a check and send part of the money back to cover “fees” or “taxes.” Legitimate prizes never require upfront payment.

3. Watch out for overpayment scams

In overpayment scams, someone sends you a check for more than the agreed amount and asks you to refund the difference. Once you send the money back, the original check is discovered to be fake—and you’re left covering the loss.

4. Pressure to act quickly is a warning sign

Scammers rely on urgency to keep you from asking questions. Requests to deposit a check immediately, send money back right away, or keep the transaction confidential should raise concern. Take your time—legitimate transactions won’t rush you.

5. Never send money back before a check fully clears

Funds appearing in your account doesn’t mean the check has cleared. Verification can take days or even weeks. Never send money, gift cards, or P2P payments based on a deposited check until your financial institution confirms it’s legitimate.
