What to do if your Identity is Stolen: A Step-by-Step Guide
Identity theft is more than an inconvenience—it can quickly derail your finances, credit, and peace of mind. If your identity is stolen, you need to act fast. This guide walks you through exactly what to do if your identity is stolen, who to contact, and how KEMBA Credit Union can help you through the recovery process.
Step 1: place a fraud alert on your credit reports
The moment you suspect identity theft, contact one of the three major credit bureaus and ask them to place a free one-year fraud alert on your credit file. That bureau is then required to notify the other two. A fraud alert makes it harder for a thief to open accounts in your name.

- Equifax: equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services
- TransUnion: transunion.com/fraud-alerts
step 2: Report the Indentity theft to the ftc
Next, go to IdentityTheft.gov—the Federal Trade Commission’s official recovery website. This tool will help you create a personal recovery plan, file an identity theft report, and even auto-generate letters to send to businesses or debt collectors.
You’ll receive a step-by-step checklist based on your situation, including pre-filled documents and dispute forms.
step 3: review and freeze your credit
Once you’ve set the fraud alert and reported the incident to the FTC, request free copies of your credit reports from all three credit bureaus through AnnualCreditReport.com. Look for accounts you didn’t open or inquiries you don’t recognize.
To lock things down further, place a credit freeze with each bureau. A freeze blocks new credit applications in your name until you lift it. Unlike fraud alerts, you must contact all three bureaus individually to freeze your credit. It’s also a good idea to contact ChexSystems. In case anyone tried to open any bank accounts using your name, ChexSystems can place a fraud alert if your information is used.
step 4: contact your financial institutions— including kemba
Call the fraud department of each financial institution where your accounts may be affected. At KEMBA, we take your protection seriously. If you’re a victim of identity theft, we can:
- Secure your existing KEMBA accounts
- Help you open new accounts or reissue debit cards
- Assist you in monitoring account activity
- Guide you through filing a dispute or fraud claim

step 5: file a police report (if needed)
Although not always required, filing a report with your local police department may help if creditors or debt collectors demand proof of the crime. Bring a copy of your FTC Identity Theft Report, a government-issued ID, and any proof you have of the fraudulent activity.
step 6: update your passwords and enable multi-factor authentication
Change the passwords for your online banking, email, and any accounts that contain personal or financial information. Make each password unique and complex. Whenever possible, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for an added layer of protection.
step 7: keep monitoring and stay alert
Your identity may continue to be vulnerable after the initial theft. Consider using a credit monitoring service and keep an eye out for suspicious emails, calls, or unexpected bills. At KEMBA, we also recommend setting up account alerts through online banking so you’re notified of any unusual activity immediately.
