Don’t take the bait: How to Spot and Stop Phishing Scams

Phishing scams continue to rise, don't be a victim!

Phishing scams continue to rise, and cybercriminals are getting more convincing than ever. At KEMBA, protecting our members is a top priority, and that starts with awareness. Below are some of the most common scams we’re seeing now, plus smart steps you can take to protect your information and finances.

Email Phishing: Watch for Fake Alerts and Urgent Requests

Email phishing scams often look like legitimate messages from trusted companiesβ€”sometimes even mimicking KEMBA or other financial institutions. These emails may:

  • Claim your account has been locked or compromised
  • Urge you to click a link to β€œverify” your information
  • Contain fake attachments pretending to be invoices or statements

Β

How to protect yourself:

  • Never click on suspicious links or download attachments from unknown senders.
  • Look closely at the sender’s email addressβ€”it may be off by just one letter.
  • When in doubt, contact the company directly using contact information you trustβ€”not what’s in the email.

Text Phishing (Smishing): Fast, Fake, and Dangerous

Text message scamsβ€”also known as β€œsmishing”—are becoming more common. These messages often appear to come from your bank, a delivery service, or even government agencies. They might include:

  • A warning that your debit card is locked
  • A β€œtracking link” for a package you didn’t order
  • A message saying you’ve won a prize or refund

How to protect yourself:

  • Don’t click on links in texts from unknown numbers.
  • Avoid responding, even if the message says β€œText STOP.”
  • Report suspicious texts to your mobile carrier by forwarding the message to 7726 (SPAM).
